DSE Workstation

The numbered issues are as follows:

1. Adjustable height and angle to seat back.

2. Good lumbar support.

3. Adjustable seat height to bring the hands to a comfortable position on the keyboard. Seat also has a stable five–star base.

4. Correct seat – height adjustment and keeping the feet supported prevents excess pressure on underside of thighs and backs of knees.

5. Foot support if user cannot get their feet on the floor.

6. Space for postural change, no obstacles under desk; this allows the user to fidget and change position as they work.

7. Forearms approximately horizontal when hands are on keyboard.

8. Minimal extension, flexion or deviation of wrists; wrists should be straight and flat when on the keyboard, indicating proper seat-height adjustment.

9. Screen height and tilt should be adjustable to allow comfortable head position.

10. Space in front of keyboard to support hands/wrists during pauses in keying; a wrist-rest can provide further support, if required.

PPE – Personal Protective Equipment: -


This term includes equipment worn and used by people at work to protect them from both general and specific risks.

Personal protective equipment is defined as meaning all equipment (including clothing affording protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work and which protects him against one or more risks to his health or safety, and any addition or accessory designed to meet that objective.

The range of PPE: -


A wide range of personal protective equipment (PPE) is available for use by people at work. This includes:

Head protection: -

Industrial safety helmets, various forms of riding helmets, industrial scalp protectors (bump caps) and caps and hair nets.

Eye protection: -

Safety spectacles, eye shields, safety goggles, and face shields.

Face protection: -

Face shields which can be hand-held, fixed to a helmet or strapped to the head.

Hearing protection: -

Ear plugs, ear defenders, muffs and pads, ear valves, acoustic wool.

Body protection: -

One – piece and two-piece overalls, donkey jackets, rubber and PVC – coated aprons, vapor suits, splash-resistant suits, warehouse coats, body warmers, thermal and weather protection over clothing, oilskin over-clothing, high visibility clothing, personal buoyancy equipment, such as life jackets.

Hand and arm protection: -

General purpose fibre gloves, PVC fabric gauntlets, leather gloves and sleeves, wrist protectors, chain mail hand and arm protectors.

Leg and foot protection: -

Safety boots and shoes, wellington boots, clogs, foundry boots, anti-static footwear, together with gaiters and anklets.

What is Fire?

     ‘Fire’ can be defined in several ways:
  
              A spectacular example of a fast-chemical reaction between a combustible substance and oxygen accompanied by the evolution of heat.
             
             A mixture in gaseous form of a combustible substance and oxygen with sufficient energy put into the mixture to start a fire.

           Unexpected combustion generating sufficient heat or smoke resulting in damage to plant, equipment, goods and /or buildings.

Classification of fires: -

Class A -  Solid materials, usually organic, such as paper, wood, coal and textiles.
Class B - Flammable liquids, such as petrol, oil and solvents.
Class C - Gases, such as methane, propane, and acetylene.
Class D - Metals, such as aluminium or magnesium.
Class F - High-temperature fats and oils, such as cooking fat.

Efficient Movement Principles: -

Employees should be trained in efficient movement principles that incorporate basic safe lifting techniques. This technique minimizes the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and consists of the following steps:



Before lifting:

Check the weight, C of G and stability of the load.

Plan the route of the carry.

Establish a firm grip.



The lift:

Bend the knees and use the leg muscles to lift.

Keep the back upright.

Keep the load close to the body.

Avoid twisting, over-reaching, jerking.



Setting down:

Use the same principles as when lifting.

Maintain good balance.

Set the load down and then adjust its position using body weight.

Nebosh Exam Technique

1. Read the Question Carefully. Be sure you know exactly what type of information the question is asking for. 

2. Time Monitor:- 

The 20-mark question in the first section should take around 25 minutes to answer, with five minutes reviewing time. 

The 8-mark questions in section 2 should take around eight minutes to answer. 

This will leave an accumulated time of ten minutes at the end of section 2 to review your answers. 

It is really easy to spend more time than you should, providing a fantastic answer to a question that you are confident about, but this could mean that you don’t have time to attempt all the other questions. 

Equally, if you find a question particularly tough, sometimes it is better to move on to the next question and come back to it rather than spend too long trying to answer it and risk missing other questions out. 

3. Mind Map:- 

What is Mind Map? 

A mind map is a visual representation of hierarchical information that includes a central idea surrounded by connected branches of associated topics. 

Use of Mind Map:

The answer plan is your memory aid and can take the form of a list, or a ‘mind map’ (simple diagram) that helps you unload information quickly and make sure you have enough factors (or things) in your answer that will attract the available marks. 

4. Command Words and Their Meanings:- 

Generally speaking, command words such as “Explain” and “Describe” require more detail than “Identify” or “Outline”. 

Identify - things, issues, and items. Normally a word or a short sentence will be enough, providing it is clear. 

Define - Provide a generally accepted definition. 

Describe - Write down detailed information about the main features of something. It should be factual and without trying to explain anything. 

Explain - Write down an understanding of an item or issue. This is checking that you know or understand something. This word often appears in questions as “Explain how…” or “Explain why….” 

Give - Provide without explanation. Outline - Write down the important, key points or issues. A long description is not required. What is needed is a short summary of the key / important points of what is asked for in the question.

Typical Slip hazards:-
Smooth floor surfaces that are:  
- Inherently slippery (e.g. polished marble).  
- Wet because of spills or cleaning operations.
Frost and ice (e.g. outside pavements in winter or the floor in a freezer).

Typical Trip hazards:-
Uneven or loose floor surfaces (e.g. broken paving slab; poorly-laid floor mat).
Trailing cables (e.g. the cord of a vacuum cleaner).
Objects on the floor (e.g. a bag left on the floor).
